Shelby

Shelby is an electronic toy developed as a “friend of Furby” and released in 2001. Shelby was created by David Hampton, and its production ceased in 2002. This toy is notable for its interactivity and ability to communicate in several languages, including “Shelbish” (Shelby’s own language), “Furbish,” and English.

Appearance and Characteristics

Design: Shelby resembles a Furby sitting inside a shell, which it can open and close. Shelby has no tail; instead, it has a fluffy mane that runs down its back and emerges from the sides of the shell.
Features: Shelby has plastic antennae, or “tennies,” on the top of the shell, which are used for communicating with other Furbies and Shelbies. They can rotate their eyes left and right.

Variations and Colors

Two generations of Shelby were produced, each represented by six colors:

First Generation: Included colors such as Dark Blue, Blue Moon, Aquamarine, Melon Ball, Lilac, and Lemon Drop.
Second Generation: Rarer, natural colors such as Sky, Toad, Coral, Mint Tulip, Orchid, and Ladybug.

Personality and Interaction

Shelby has a somewhat sassy personality and can display various emotions. For example, if Shelby is held upside down for too long, it can express displeasure and even rudeness.

Communication: Shelby can determine whether it is communicating with another Shelby or a Furby.
Phrases: Shelby uses diverse phrases, including pirate expressions such as “Shiver me timbers!” and “Arrr!” as well as others like “Bah! Humbug!” and “Shelby, that’s me!”
